Class 5 - Summer 2026

African Dance and Drumming Day

We had a fabulous day learning some dance moves from Africa as well as drumming rhythms using a range of instruments.  We were very lucky to be led by Louis and Richard from World Jungle who brought their expertise with them and inspired us to dance and drum like never before!  This was a fantastic culmination to our Hakuna Matata theme and with the help of face paint and fabric we even looked the part!

Thank you to our lovely families and friends who got up and joined us to dance too!

Dance for Rights

Created by the Royal Ballet and Opera Schools with Create & Dance and UNICEF, this event - inspired by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - invited schools to celebrate children’s rights with Royal Ballet artists, live to our school.  The children prepared for the event by completing two workshops where they worked both individually and in groups.

Electricity free afternoon

Eco ministry organised an electricity-free for our school.  We switched off the lights, turned off screens and headed outside to do a listening walk.  We sat quietly in different locations on our school grounds and recorded what we heard.  We all found it a really relaxing and peaceful afternoon.

Theme Homework

Year 5 have produced some fabulous homework, linked to our theme of Hakuna Matata, and presented their work to the class.  We've had art work, DT constructions, animal research, cooking research, videos, music compositions and book reviews completed - it's so nice to see the children following their interests.  Have a look and see what has been brought in so far.

Interview questions with Naledi from Journey to Jo'burg

In English, we have been reading the story of Journey to Jo'burg by Beverly Naidoo.  We have studied the two main characters of Naledi and Tiro, a brother and sister, who set about a long journey to Johannesburg in search of their Mother.  We studied the characters and considered their personalities by their actions; then we wrote interview questions and responses in character, thinking about a more informal tone in their answers..  The pupils were all given the opportunity to choose one of their questions to record.  Have a listen to a few of our recordings.

RE - After Easter Pentecost Workshop

On Wednesday, we were lucky to have some members of our local church visit us to teach us more about this time in the Christian calendar.  We took part in a range of activities that involved bubbles, plaits, skittles and bookmarks alongside learning about the period of Pentecost.

PSHE

We talked about the word community and what it means to us, considering what communities we belong to.  We then thought about all the things we love about our school community and also had time to think about something we don't like as much, but had to come up with a solution for this.  We cleared the room and spent time sharing our ideas with each other, questioning our partners about their thoughts.  Following this, we enjoyed some wellbeing dance time!

Designing and making our African Mask front covers

We have studied the designs of African masks and incorported some of the features we have observed into our front cover designs.  We used paper and symmetry skills to produce some wild and wonderful designs! Have a look and see what you think...

Mark-making with African patterns

We studied a range of African patterns, looking for details of colour, shape and repetition.  Following this, we trialled our own patterns in our sketch book and then applied them to our choice of African animal.  See if you can spot our colour and shape choices...

Welcome back to our new term.

This term our theme will be "Hakuna Matata".  This is a geography-based theme where the children will learn about the continent of Africa and many of the countries, cultures and significant landmarks within it.
