At Bussage C of E Primary School, British Values are woven into the daily life of our school and sit naturally alongside our Christian vision and values of Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity. We believe that every child should flourish academically, socially, spiritually and emotionally, enabling them to become thoughtful, responsible and compassionate citizens who make a positive difference in the world. Our vision encourages children to recognise the light within themselves and others and to use their gifts, talents and character to contribute positively to society.
The Department for Education identifies the fundamental British Values as:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values are promoted explicitly through our curriculum, collective worship, School Parliament, wellbeing curriculum, wider enrichment opportunities and everyday interactions across our school community.
Democracy
At Bussage, children are encouraged to understand that their voices matter and that everyone has the right to contribute to decisions affecting their community. Democracy is embedded throughout school life and reflects our commitment to developing pupils who can participate confidently and respectfully in society.
The most visible example of democracy in action is our School Parliament, where children are elected by their peers through a democratic voting process. Candidates prepare speeches, share their ideas and campaign for election before secret ballots are held. Through this experience, pupils learn about representation, fairness and accountability.
Our School Parliament is organised into five ministries, led by Year 6 pupils and supported by staff members. These ministries develop action plans, lead projects and report back to the wider school community throughout the year. This reflects our belief that pupils can make a genuine difference within school, their local community and the wider world. The school's recent SIAMS inspection recognised that"Pupils make a difference in this school."
Children are also consulted through:

By encouraging pupils to express their views and listen carefully to others, we help them develop the wisdom and confidence required to participate positively in modern Britain.

The Rule of Law
At Bussage, we help children understand that rules and laws are essential in creating safe, caring and successful communities. Through our vision of dignity and community, children learn that rules exist to protect everyone's rights and freedoms.
Our three school rules:
- Be Ready
- Be Respectful
- Be Safe
provide a simple and consistent framework that helps children make positive choices. At the beginning of each school year, classes explore what these rules mean in practice and how they help everyone flourish.
Children learn about laws and responsibilities through our curriculum, collective worship, history learning, visits from community services and discussions about fairness, justice and responsibility. We support children in understanding not only the consequences of poor choices but also the positive impact they can have through making good ones.

- Learning about Parliament, government and law-making in history and geography.
- School Parliament discussions about improving school life fairly for all.

Individual Liberty
Our vision encourages every child to discover their God-given talents and develop confidence in who they are. We believe that children flourish when they are given opportunities to make choices, take responsibility and develop independence within safe boundaries.
Children are taught about rights, responsibilities and personal freedoms through our wellbeing curriculum, online safety education, worship and wider curriculum experiences. We encourage pupils to develop their own interests, opinions and aspirations while understanding that liberty comes with responsibility toward others.
Pupils regularly make choices about:
- Their learning approaches and outcomes
- Participation in clubs and enrichment activities
- Leadership opportunities
- Charitable projects, eco awareness and community initiatives
We encourage children to develop their talents, make responsible choices and discover their unique gifts as part of living life in all its fullness
Our nurturing environment helps children develop resilience, confidence and self-belief whilst ensuring they understand how to exercise their freedoms safely and respectfully.

Mutual Respect
Mutual respect lies at the heart of our Christian vision and is reflected in our commitment to dignity for every member of our school community. We actively model and teach respect through all aspects of school life.
Christmas boxes created and collected at school ready to be sent off to Eastern Europe to children who are in need of our support.
Children learn that everyone is unique and valued. They understand that respectful relationships help communities thrive and that t
heir words and actions can positively affect those around them.
Our welcoming and inclusive ethos enables children to build strong relationships with peers and adults. This is reflected in the school's positive culture, recognised by both Ofsted and SIAMS. Ofsted noted that pupils are "polite and respectful" and that the school feels like a family.

Tolerance and Understanding of Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a Church of England school, we welcome families of all faiths and of no faith and are proud of our inclusive community. Our vision of community encourages children to understand, respect and celebrate differences while recognising what unites us.
Through our Religion and Worldviews curriculum, collective worship and wider curriculum opportunities, pupils learn about Christianity and a range of world faiths and beliefs. They explore different traditions, values and ways of life, helping them develop empathy, understanding and respect.
Children are encouraged to ask questions, challenge stereotypes and engage thoughtfully with different perspectives. We celebrate cultural diversity and help pupils understand their role as respectful global citizens.

Challenging Discrimination and Extremism
Bussage C of E Primary School is committed to creating a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all. We actively challenge discrimination, prejudice and any views that undermine the fundamental British Values of democracy, liberty, respect, tolerance and the rule of law.
Through our curriculum, worship and relationships-based approach, we equip children with the knowledge, confidence and critical thinking skills needed to recognise and challenge intolerance and extremism. We encourage pupils to be courageous advocates who stand up for what is right and contribute positively to society.
