Class 4 - Autumn 2026

Science Investigation

Year 4 carried out an investigation to answer the question Does the size and shape of a shadow depend on the position of the light source?  They planned the investigation and discussed how to make it a fair test.  Every half an hour, the children went outside to draw around the same person's shadow and then measured it.  After 5 measurements, the children were able to see a pattern of the shadows moving to the right and getting shorter each time.  They then went on to predict what would happen to their shadow as the position of the sun moved through the rest of the day.  

Whole Class Music Tuition - Clarinet

Year 4 have had their first 3 sessions learning about how the reed works on a clarinet and also how the clarinet fits together.  They have been using the mouthpiece to make sounds and joining in with songs that are developing their knowledge of rhythm.  This week saw the children learning the note E and learning how to adjust their mouth position to avoid too much of a squeak!

Visiting Author - Jess Butterworth

We were lucky enough to have local author, Jess Butterworth, visit us and help us to create ideas for our own stories.  She asked us a variety of questions about the place we would set our stories, the problems the characters would overcome and more.  We had a great time and all came away really inspired! Year 4 also had a chance to question Jess about her books asking a range of carefully considered questions.

English - The legend of Podkin One Ear

Year 4 have been enjoying the start of the story Podkin One Ear by Kieran Larwood.  They have been creating maps in the style of the ones found in the book and also using their reading and imagination skills to draw the character of The Storyteller from the book.  Have a look and see their creative work:
