SPRING 2022 – Out of this world!

OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Welcome to our new theme of learning for Spring Term 2022! Out of the world! During this theme, we will be finding out all about space and Earth, as well as light and electricity. We will learn about the moon landings, creating our own newspaper reports and about key figures in the history of space travel through writing biographies. In music we shall be listening to classical pieces such as Gustav Holst’s planet suite and more modern music such as David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Our art work will be exploring the talent of artists such as Peter Thorpe, creating our own pieces inspired by his work. All this and much more besides…..keep checking in to our blog to see how our learning journey develops this term.

Recorders:

Look at this fabulous bunch of musicians! The entire class are doing brilliantly at learning the recorder, they can already play a variety of songs using the notes A and B and crotchets, quavers and minims.

Forest School:

The class have been enjoying the outdoor space during Forest School this term. They have been led by Mrs Edwards in a variety of fabulous activities. Here are a few photographs of what they have been up to:

In our art lessons we have been studying the style of Australian artist, Peter Thorpe. We learnt about foreground and background in compositions so we could decide how our final piece should look. We used our knowledge of drawing to learn how to draw a rocket, we followed a ‘How to draw a rocket’ guide video, tried our ideas out in our sketch books before deciding on our own personal rocket designs. For the background, we used vibrant felt pens to mark out and colour geometric shapes and lines. We made our rockets 3D by adding two small paper springs to the back of them. We are very proud of the finished pieces.

We have started looking at electricity in our science lessons and have been learning about the types of renewable and non-renewable energy that we use. We were able to link our knowledge back to last term’s H2O theme where we had talked about hydro power.

Next, we had a really fun time investigating how to make a simple circuit – we used a battery (cell), some wires with crocodile clips, a bulb, a buzzer and a switch. It was so exciting getting the bulb to light and the buzzer to make a sound. We added a switch into our circuits so that we could change them from complete to incomplete.

Yippee! World Book Day was today – Thursday 3rd March 2022. We had great fun dressing up as a word – can you guess what words we were? We did lots of book-centred activities to further prove Class 3’s love of reading. Take a look at our day.

Autumn 2021 – H2O

Welcome to Class 3’s blog for 2021-2022. This Autumn term, we are learning all about water in our theme – H2O! We are going to be scientists and geographers to find out about the water cycle, to  learn all about river features and to find out about major rivers in the UK and the wider world.  We would like to learn about our local waterways, the historic docks in Gloucester and the canal system nearby, in order to do this we are looking forward to our visit to the Waterways Museum in Gloucester in a few weeks ….watch this space to see photographs of our trip.

We participated in a fantastic workshop on how to build a crane using cogs and gears, took a historic tour around the docks finding out lots of interesting information about the history of our local area as well as exploring the museum too. We also had a really exciting trip along the Gloucester to Sharpness canal on the Queen Boadicea that was used to rescue soldiers across the channel during WW2.

Look what else we have been up to this term:

We listened carefully to ‘The Storm’ by Benjamin Britten. We composed our own music to accompany one of the repetitive rhythms that runs throughout the piece. We also create some mixed media artwork in response to the music.

We have also explored a range of artists to see how they have used water as a theme in their work. The first artist we have focused on is David Hockney, looking in particular at his painting, ‘A bigger Splash’. The children experimented with different techniques to create water effects in their sketch books before creating their final mixed media piece.

A watercolour colour wash was used to create the sky effect, then the children chose from their sketch books trials which method they wished to use to create the pool water – bubble wrap print and wax resist were popular methods. The building was created with collage and the children blended pencil crayons to create lifelike palm trees.

All of the staff in Year 3 have been amazed by the stunning results of the homework project that was set in response to our school visit and to our geography learning about river features. The children have truly outdone themselves – and thank you to the parents for their support with this project. Here are some of the results of our river features and canal system models. WOW!
